After a final filming session we decided to spilt into two groups; Kim and Elliot were to edit the footage we have obtained and Rosie and myself were to create the DVD cover for our film.

Before designing the actual DVD cover we had to decide on a name for our film, after several ideas we decided on the name of ‘Desperate Measures’ which is a play on the saying ‘desperate times call for desperate measures’ .When creating the DVD cover we had to research the dimensions of a DVD cover  and the typical conventions you would find on a DVD cover such as the DVD sign , the film rating , the production company etc. When deciding on a colour scheme we all agreed that we should stick to the ‘romantic’ style of the movie and therefore use the colour of red/pink and black. We also chose ‘swirly’ writing for the titles to create a fancy and classy look.

We also had to choose photos for the Cover and had a difficult time deciding on what to choose, as we knew we would not have time to have a proper photoshoot for the cover. However to overcome this problem we decided to print screen some shots for the movie and place them on the cover. Furthermore we chose to have the images in black and white to create a more structred and simple colour scheme. However i had trouble deciding what else to add to the front cover as there was quite alot of space , to over come this i added a Heart brush , although there is still quite a lot of free space i didn’t want to overcrowd it by adding too much.

I then tried to make it as close to a real DVD cover by adding age restrictions , the DVD sign , production company names and a bar code.

In this session we held a focus group we asked around 8 people from our media class to view are film and write their views on the questionnaire kim had created. The reason we decided to only ask those from our media class to comment on our film is so that we could ask them about the 180 degree rule and continuity as it had already been explained to them, this way it meant that we would avoid confusion with those who do not fully understand the concepts of continuity and the 180 degree rule; Here are the results we recieved;

yes , very effective.

After reviewing the comments that our classmates had made the general consensus suggested that the film was a success. The majority of people stated that they liked the actors , setting , DVD cover and the overall general idea of the film, the focus group said that they had enjoyed the humor in the film and found it quite funny , this was a surprise to myself as i was initially pesamistic as to how successful the humour would be in the film .

A lot of the people who had said they enjoyed the film noticed the continuity error with the actors, however this was explained to them that we had no choice but to use different actors , but we also said the we could use this to our advantage , as it is a speed dating event and therefore people change tables throughout the night, this idea was also explained in  production log 3. The only other negative comments we received was about picture quality , however we felt that the quality of the camera was a problem that was of no fault of our own.

Before filming we had to identify and analyse any potential risks that may occur during filming , to do this we have to fill out a risk assessment form and illustrate how high or low each risk was.

Furthermore we also had to have signed a Location Release form. This was in order to gain permission to film at the desired locations, we asked the manager of the brasserie and the site manager to sign the forms. The form consisted of dates that we would need to film.

We also had to gain permission from the actors in order to film them , to do this we required them to a sign and personal Release form.

20/11/08-Toilet and Door Scene

Before we began filming we each allocated ourselves to a job Kim checked the actual scene matched the story board, Elliot and I manned the camera and Rosie dealt with sound.

For the toilet scene our idea was to have an over the shoulder shot whilst Jennifer ( Rosy) were to put her make-up on in the mirror. In order to do this we had to position the camera so that we were not scene in the mirror and also so that we were positioned at the desired  angle, this proved easier than anticipated. For this scene in particular we did not have to film many takes as we achieved the desired outcome quite quickly.

The second shot we filmed was Jennifer’s ( Rosy’s) hand pushing the door open into the restuarant. It took several takes to get this shot right as the lighting was slightly different and it was difficult to get the positioning of the hand right. However after several tries we felt we aquired the shot we needed.

27/11/08-Wayne and Jennifer Conversation scene

Initially we had wanted to film the entrance scene into the brasserie with the characters Laura and Brett, however this was not possible as the actress Gemma who was to play the part of laura was ill , and the actor craig who was to play the part of brett was not being very co-operative. Due to this we decided to post-pone this scene and carry on with filming the rest of the scenes we needed.

For this scene everyone Kept the same jobs as they had , had for the pervious scene , except for myself. We realised that we did not have a waitress for the scene so i volunteered. We had to film the scene twice over the shoulder Jennifer (Rosy) and once from over the shoulder of Wayne (Charlie). When doing this we obeyed the 180 degree rule, which was part of our brief.

1/12/08 -Under the Table Shot

This shot was very quick to obtain. Our idea was to shoot Wayne touching Jennifer’s leg to do this we placed the camera under the table, facing the actors leg. We asked Charlie to touch Rosy’s leg whilst simultaneously saying their lines. This is so that we could edit the footage to make the conversation and shots flow more naturally.

4/12/08-Entrance to restaurant scene

Our initial idea for this scene was  to have Jennifer walking into the restaurant to see the ‘good looking’ man Brett, only to be pushed out of the way by Laura , however due to unreliable actors we had to competley remove this scene from our film, although this meant that we did not get the exact film we desired, it still meant that we would get a complete film that made sense. Instead we decided to have Jennifer ( Rosy ) walk straight into the restaurant to sit down with wayne (charlie) , furthermore we decided this would be a point of view shot , from Wayne’s point of view.

We also had trouble with getting the same extras as we had in the conversation scene and thought that this may effect the continuity of the film , however we realised that the different people would fit in well with the speed dating theme.

From this experience we decided that in the future we would not use friends as extras as it allows us to become easily distracted and defer from the task. Furthermore we decided that for the next film we will have to make , we will try to use a minimal amount of extras.

After our photoshop tutorial , we decided that we would concentrate more into putting the features of our film together. We knew we had to consider costumes , colours , venues and actors. We started by deciding the appearence and costumes and costume colours we wanted the actors to have, this was so that knew what to look for when it came to the auditions. We knew that in all films the colours that characters wear are specific components into the meaning of the film, so in order the add this attribute into our film we searched colour meanings and found a website that provided all the information we required:

http://www.color-wheel-pro.com

With this website we decided what colours we wanted our actors to wear , in order to reflect the personality of the characters we had created.We decided that the characters should look like and should wear the following;

Jennifer ( the main female character)

Appearence

  • Brunette
  • Formal
  • ‘perfect looking’
  • Clean

Costume

  • Pencil skirt-Black to symbolise elegance and power
  • Blouse-White to symbolise cleanliness and purity
  • Necklace and bracelet-Purple to siginfy independence
  • High Heels- Black to again reinforce the idea of elegance and power

Wayne ( the main male Character)

Appearence

  • Slicked black or brown hair
  • Rugged looking
  • Dirty

Costume

  • Jumper- Red to signify desire or sexuality or green to represents fertility
  • Old and Ripped Denim jeans- Blue to suggest confidence and arrogance
  • A chain and a ring- Gold to suggest decay and dirt
  • Scummy Trainers- White with brown scuff marks , to again suggest uncleanliness and dirt

Brett ( Male needed for a particular camera shot)

Appearence

  • Spikey hair
  • agreeably attractive
  • Friendly/approachable look

Costume

  • Cardigan- Blue to suggest masculinity
  • Shirt- White to signify cleanliness and decency
  • New/crisp jeans- Blue to suggest trust and truth

Laura ( Female needed for a particular shot)

Appearence

  • Long brown hair
  • ‘loose’ looking

Costume

  • Dress- Red to imply Danger and lust
  • Necklace and bracelet- Black to suggest mystery
  • High Heels- Black to suggest mystery and desire once again

Extras

Should be dressed formally as they have the desire to ‘impress’ their fellow speed daters. They will be dressed in a variety colours to suggest a plethora of different meanings such as vanity, energy , saftey and delight.

Once we had decided what we needed to look for , we then realised we had to go about finding some actors. In order to do this we had to create audition posters and place them around the college , on the posters we included what the genre of the movie was , the time and date the auditions were being held and in what room they were going to take place in. We left the posters up for two weeks awaiting a response.

Once deciding on outfits , we realised that it would be wise to start creating our storyboard , this is so that we could gain insight into what shots we wanted and needed in order to create a successful film; here are the shots we created.

Camera Tutorial

In order to learn how to use the camera, we had to visit the on site camera technician Brendan. He showed us the types of camera we may have to use in order to make our film, one was a small camera and the other was reltivley large in comparison , we were told that for quality purposes it would be better to use the larger camera in order to get a better picture. To begin the tutorial we were taught how to set up a tripod safley and correctly, we were then shown how to mount the camera on to the tripod securely. We were then shown how to position the tripod and camera in order to obtain a level shot. Finally we were taught how to use the different functions and settings on the camera, which gave us a clearer idea as to how we would set up and film the shots we required.

Auditions

These are the posters we put up around the college asking students to come to auditions.

Audition Poster Audition Poster 2

Initially i was quite pessamistic as to how many people would turn up at the audition , as the posters had only been out for two weeks, which i feel did not give people enough time to decide whether they would be able to do it. However after we had prepared the audition room and set up the camera, people began to show up. We asked the auditionees to simply follow the script for the film, so that we could see who would be best for the part. In total 13 people turned up to audition , and we felt that , that was a sufficiant amount in order to find who we needed to play the main parts. It did not take us long to decide who we wanted for each part as there were only a few people that stood out. Ultimatley we cast;

Rosy as Jennifer

Charlie as Wayne

Gemma as Laura

Craig as Brett

Rebecca as the Waitress.

We then told the others who did not get main parts that they coould be extras if they so wished.

For my foundation portfolio, i had the choice between two assignment briefs, one was to create a college magazine which had to include a photograph of a student in medium close-up , as mock up of a contents page and an appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. The other was a Continuity task which involved  filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, a exchanging a couple of line of dialouge.

I was initally attracted to the film brief because i though it would allow me to use my imagination and express my creative ideas more freely, i also though it would give be the opportunity to gain valuable new skills, unlike the print brief which felt quite restrictive, and i did not feel that i would be able to create any interesting and original ideas from this. Furthermore i felt like i needed more of a challenge which would be provided by the film brief.

In response to the brief i imeadiatley formed a group with like minded members in my class , who also shared a desire to complete the film brief; these were Kimberly Grant , Elliot Bass and Rosie Golder. Once the group was formed we came up with seven potential ideas that we could develop in order to conform to the brief. These ideas were; A husband walking in on an affair, a drugs situation, a police interview, a hospital situation, a teenager starting a new school, a prison visit and a speed dating event.

We believed we could potentially use these ideas because in each scenario we thought there was an opportunity to use key concepts , a variety of camera angles and that it would give us the basis for a good script. Futhermore it would ultimatley  fufill the assignment brief.

After a lesson of exploring and discussing possible ways of developing these creative ideas , we narrowed the choice down to three main ideas; a speed dating event , a husband walking in on an affair and a police interrogation, we then collated these ideas into a Power Point presentation and presented our ideas to our class. This was so that we could could listen to constructive critisisms and feedback , which would then go on to influence the idea that we were to pick.

In the presentation we gave a detailed response to how we would develop and represent each idea in our film clip. From the presentation and the feedback we received we decided that the speed dating event was the best idea to go with , this was because it was unique and original and our peers told us that it also gave us the opportunity to make the film clip entertaining and comedic, furthermore it was the idea we had had our hearts set on from the very beggining We decided against the affair because our peers told us that the affair idea sounded like a soap story line, which was not an idea we wished to aspire to. We also decided against the police interrogation idea as we did not receive as much positive feedback on the idea as we had hoped and therefore felt we wouldn’t be able to do the idea justice.

These images show the initial ideas we came up with when we were introduced to the breif.

2/10/08

After we had decided souly on one idea we then had to come up with our SMART targets. These targets were to ensure that the targets need to complete our idea were; specific , measurable, agreed upon, realistic and time based.

The SMART targets we came up with were as follows;

S- come up with ideas and develop these ideas further

M- The goal will be achieved when we have come up with all our ideas

A-This is when everyone has agreed upon an idea

R- It is realistic because we will easliy be able to come up with ideas that conform to the brief

T-These ideas will be created in the initial weeks on the task.

S-Learn how to use computer programmes such as photoshop

M-This will be achieved when i am confident using the programme

A-This will be when the entire group feels confident with the programme

R-This is needed in order to fulfill the assignment brief

T-We believe it should take one week to learn how to use the basics of both programme.

S- Create a story board, Script and find actors

M- The goal will be achieved when the script has been written, the story board as been drawn , and actors have been recruited.

A-When everyone in the group has come to a unanomous decision on the scenes chosen and actors picked.

R-Its an achievable task

T- We estimate that it should take two to three weeks to complete this.

S-Start and finish the filming process

M-This will be achieved when we have finish filming all the scenes we need.

A-This will be when all group members are happy with what has been filmed

R-This is needed in order to fulfill the assignment brief

T-We estimate that it may take three to four weeks to film

S-Edit the film

M-This will be achieved when the film has been produced

A-This will be when the group is happy with the scene selections and edits that have ben made.

R-When we get the desired outcome

T-We estimate that this will take three weeks

16/10/08

After fulfilling our first target, we went on to complete the second of our smart targets , this was to learn to use Photoshop. Our first task was to find one picture of a penguin and one of a desert, we were then told we had to make it appear as though the penguin was in the desert. In order to create this image we had to add several layers to the image of the desert , this was just incase any mistakes were made further along the process. We then had to select on the penguin image and cut the penguin out of the photo using the lasso tool, there were three types of lasso to choose from, these were: freehand , magnetic and smart edge. I decided to choose the magnetic lasso tool as i felt this would allow me to cut the penguin out of the image more accuratley. I then had to transfer the image of the penguin on to the image of the dessert. After i had done this i tried to make the image more believable by feathering the image of the penguin , this meant smoothing out any sharp edges that may have been created when using the lasso tool.

The next task was to create an image that used the idea of juxtaposition , this meant putting to images together to create a new meaning. In this instance i decided to take a picture of Jude Law and a picture of a woman in a dress, to create the image of Jude Law in a Dress. Again i added several layers to the dress image , and used the magnetic lasso tool to cut out Jude Law’s head and went through a similar process as i did when creating the penguin/desert image. However this time i used to features to gain more experiance in using the programme. I used features such as the stamp tool to add extra hair on the head and i also used the Hue and Saturation adjustment to try to get the skin tones of Jude Law and the Women in the Dress to match.

Here are the Two images that i initially started out with;
